Seychelles seems to us a paradise in the expanses of the Indian Ocean. But the fact that the photographs look like the personification of a serene life, green tropics and a favorable climate, in fact, turns out to be a region where you can fully experience the full range of environmental problems of the modern world. What is hidden from the eyes of tourists? What is really happening in Seychelles?

1. Tropical hurricanes

In the Indian Ocean, tropical cyclones are increasingly observed, which grow into powerful tropical storm systems.

This causes enormous damage to the infrastructure and agriculture of the islands, and, ultimately, the tourism industry, which brings significant revenue to the budget. Every year, the storm season begins earlier, and to eliminate the consequences more and more financial resources are required.

2. Sea level rise

Due to rising sea levels, a number of islands of the archipelago, which are atolls and have a small height, are faced with the destruction of the coastline and salinization of coastal agricultural plantations.

This problem also has no solution, and all that remains for the inhabitants of such islands is to move to the neighboring unsinkable land area.

3. Biodiversity loss

As in many other tropical regions, Seychelles uses the gifts of a warm climate and is actively engaged in agriculture.

The abundance of rainfall and favorable temperature conditions allow the cultivation of coconut palm and a number of other profitable crops, but the development of plantations has a downside – the loss of biodiversity. Seychelles is a unique world of endemic nature, which is gradually disappearing with the development of agriculture.

4. The death of coral reef

Some of the islands of this archipelago are of coral origin, that is, they are atolls.

But today there is no trace of the past diversity and abundance of corals. Due to excessive warming of coastal waters, corals have become discolored. According to scientists, the islands have already lost 90% of the coastal reefs, and this is an impressive tragedy.

The problems of Seychelles to one degree or another are also characteristic of other tropical island states. Alas, in the modern world with a rapidly changing climate, they are becoming the first regions that feel the consequences of the negative changes that have swept the planet.
