Photographer Mark O’Neill spent a lot of time and effort creating a series of photographs showing a ghostly collection of monuments in the former Yugoslav territories. These lonely sculptures in the middle of the landscapes of the “broken dream” recall the monuments of ancient civilization buried in the sands of time. Each of them is trying to tell the story of their past in their own unique language. About wartime events that are too painful to remember, and too terrible to forget.
These sculptures seem earthly and alien at the same time. They are bizarre and at the same time extremely understandable. Bulky, angular, threatening to fall on you at any moment. Some, it seems, had long had to soar into the night sky and dissolve into space, but their depressing heaviness became their enemy.
