This building in Los Angeles looks very unusual. A person unfamiliar with this architectural masterpiece can hardly guess what is hiding behind a bizarre facade. It houses the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and experts note the highest sound quality in this room. But if the issue of acoustics and interior space was resolved at the highest level, then the facade of the building gave the owners a lot of problems: it had to be redone several times after the opening of the concert hall. What was the mistake of the architects?

The main architect of the original project is Frank Gehry. As one of the founders of deconstructivism, he created several vibrant buildings that amaze with bold decisions and unusual shapes. The Walt Disney Concert Hall is one of them.

The building, which was inaugurated in 2003, houses the Concert Hall of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. One of the sponsors was Walt Disney’s widow and his corporation. The construction of the building took more than 10 years and was accompanied by a lack of finances, but in the end, all material issues were settled and the building was solemnly presented to the public.

The bold image of the building with asymmetric facades is combined with the chamber atmosphere of the concert hall. The interior decoration is made using natural wood, filled with harmony and peace. But if fans of musical art were delighted with the new concert hall, then the inhabitants of the surrounding houses began to write complaints and requests to various authorities. Those who used to park their cars and bicycles in the parking lot near the place where Frank Gehry’s new creation was now flaunted were also unhappy. It soon became clear that the problem lies in the facade of the hall.

The exterior of the building is very original, and its facade resembles a structure destroyed by a hurricane. The walls of the building were lined with steel sheets with high reflectivity, which was enhanced by concave structures: as soon as the sun rose over the horizon, the Walt Disney Concert Hall turned into a giant reflector. Residents of neighboring houses could not cope with the heat in their apartments, even with air conditioning, and in the nearest parking lot the asphalt and car parts melted. Of course, the owners of the building had to solve such a serious problem, but it was not possible to do this the first time. After some time, it turned out to change the characteristics of the facade by applying special substances, without changing the appearance of the building.
